The University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved 101 universities to offer Open and Distance Learning (ODL) programmes for the 2025–26 academic year. Additionally, 113 universities have been cleared to provide online courses.
Registrations are now open for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to get recognized by the UGC’s Distance Education Bureau (DEB). The academic session for approved distance learning programmes is scheduled to begin in February 2026.
Additional updates:
- The UGC has barred universities from offering psychology, microbiology, biotechnology, food & nutrition science, and other healthcare/allied subjects via distance or online mode starting July–August 2025.
- Nalanda Open University (NOU) is updating its self-learning materials (SLMs) to better align with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and DEB standards. This move aims to improve quality and maintain UGC-DEB recognition for 2026 and beyond.
